Irving’s team remained at the clearing as they continued the hunt for evidence, particularly as it related to the parking lot and matching tire tracks to what was found on the scene of Amber Hoffman’s murder on the highway.

A consensus had been reached to home in on the young men in the photo, asking if they would voluntarily submit a DNA swab. Jason Gatwick was the first one to approach. His shift continued at the fire station and the agents headed that way.

Kate sat behind the wheel of her Explorer and glanced at Surrey. “Do you think I overstepped?”

“You mean with insisting on swabs?” He raised a shoulder. “Maybe. But I think your point came across well enough. I get why he wasn’t keen to move forward—”

“He doesn’t want to believe one of those kids could be a killer,” Kate cut in.

“That, and we run the risk of setting off a chain of events that could backfire on us.”

She drew in her brow. “How so?”

“This is a small town. The parents of these kids all know each other or are acquainted in some way. We start suggesting one of these young men is the killer, the town will turn on itself. And I don’t know how we prevent that, but we’ll have to find a way to spin it such that it appears as a way to rule out rather than confirm a suspect.”

“That, we can do,” Kate replied.

“Then you have to think that whoever the unsub is, he’ll understand that we know about the clearing, about the group of friends. That could invite him to finish the job he started quickly, or he takes flight. We lose either way,” he added.

“What choice is there? How can we move forward without ruling out the three remaining people in this circle of friends?”

“Four.” Surrey glanced at her. “You’re forgetting Sam Hardy. Listen to your gut on this one, Reid. You’re not wrong to want to go at him.”

“And his father,” Kate added. “Although, it’s appearing less likely that Randall Hardy would murder these kids for suspecting they knew about his affair. Why would that matter to them? It would’ve only mattered to Heidi Sumner.” Kate made a left turn and the firehouse came into view. “I want to proceed with the swabs. I see no other way to give this case forward momentum.”

Surrey nodded. “It’s your show, Reid. If this is what your gut’s telling you, then you have to push on.”

Kate drove onto the parking lot toward the side of the fire station. “My gut tells me this kid, Gatwick, who was there when two of these girls were killed, should be who we hit up first.”
